A great place to show your kids where their food comes from, and get some exercise at the same time is Tanbella Orchard. It’s a self pick apple and pear orchard in the Pialligo region near the Canberra airport. You can wander the rows of trees picking your own apples, and there is an opportunity to taste before you pick. They also have fish ponds where you can feed the fish. See how many different varieties you can get your kids to try and ask them to describe the difference between the apples, sweet, tart, tangy. Take along your drawing pad and pencils and ask the kids to sketch an apple. Take a picnic and relax among the trees. For the little kids, take The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, and read about a caterpillar who eats his way through different fruits.
